I had written a lot of stories and poems and crap and then I started my first novel. I was a big Kathy Acker fan and had loved American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis. I wanted to be like those guys. I didn't want to get too bogged down in plot. Just riff and goof around and have fun. That was the plan. Well, it worked. Mostly because I had never done it before and it was so much fun. BEGINNER'S LUCK IS REAL. That's one thing I guess I would tell beginning writers. That first book is going to have a freshness and vitality to it you may never have again. Don't screw it up!
