reading on the subway (august 9, 2006)

I'm back in New York and doing my absolute favorite thing: reading on the subway. I do not know why I like doing this so much. One reason is I live on the awesome L train, which is full of cool young artsy types. But if I just sit there I get bored so I always bring a book wherever I go and then I read a little and watch people a little. and if it's a good book I don't mind if I get stuck somewhere, or if the train is late. And if it's a sucky book, I figure that out pretty fast and I get a better one. I read one of my favorite books, THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE by William James on the G train years ago, and I still remember exactly where I was on the platform during certain parts. I also read ORYX AND CRAKE on various subways and I remember that one really well. I'm not the only one who likes to reade on the subway, lots of people do. I am always peeking over at people to see what they're reading. Only a couple times in my life have I seen someone reading one of my own books and that is more weird, than fun. I don't know why. I think some part of me still doesn't believe that I am an actual author.
